Used Magnetic Drill Presses: What to Verify Before You Buy
A used magnetic drill press is a good buy because almost nothing in it can go obsolete: a motor, a dovetail slide, an arbor, and an electromagnet. What fails is visible: a magnet face dragged across concrete, a spindle bent in a fall, gibs run dry, an arbor bore wallowed out by a dull cutter.
The new-machine ladder makes the case. The best magnetic drill press page records the Evolution EVOMAG42 at $695, the Hougen HMD904 at $1,107 to $1,230, and the Fein JHM Magforce at $1,950 in November 2026. On 3 November 2026 the used-listing search returned HMD904 machines asking $399 to $579.99 and a Fein JHM USA 101 at $449.
Inventory is not thin: 242 used listings at a $300 floor, across nine brands.
Why Used Works
The mechanism is serviceable. A mag drill is a series motor on a dovetail slide, feeding an annular cutter while an electromagnet holds the base down. Hougen’s HMD904 manual includes gib and arbor adjustment procedures, so the machine expects hand tools, not a laptop.
The consumable is the cutter. A drill with a good spindle and a flat magnet face runs for years on a $63 to $90 cutter set. A drill with a bent spindle or a pitted face will not make a straight hole at any cutter price.
Portability is the risk, and it is visible. They live in trucks and on scaffolds, get dropped and set down on grit, and that history shows in three places: the magnet face, the spindle bore, and the slide.
Freight is not the obstacle. At 30 lb, a mag drill ships cheaply. Accessories are where the budget goes. For the heavier fixed-machine version of this decision, the used surface grinders guide applies the same inspection logic to a machine that cannot be picked up.
Brands Worth Buying
Hougen (USA). The reference machine. The HMD904 is rated 7/16 to 1-1/2 inch cutters, 2 inch depth, 115V at 9A and 1,035W, 30 lb, with a slot drive arbor and a lift detector. Its magnet is rated two ways on 1 inch plate: 1,750 lb dead lift and 995 lb drill point breakaway. HMD130 and HMD115 units showed at $500.
Fein (Germany). The JHM Magforce is rated 1-5/8 inch capacity, 2 inch cutter depth, a 2-9/16 inch stroke, 2,023 lb holding force, and 28.88 lb. Fein publishes 1,100 W input and 610 W output, about 0.8 hp at the spindle, while Hougen rates the HMD904 at 9A and 1,035W, so a listing’s “1.25 hp” does not say which measure it is. The KBM 50 QX is the 50mm class, and the listing read here describes a 3MT spindle.
Milwaukee (USA). The corded 4201, 4203, 4272-21, and 4274-21 are common in maintenance shops. The 4272-21 manual rates it at 120V, 13A, a 1-5/8 inch cutter, and a 3/8 inch minimum stock thickness. That draw wants a real 15A circuit.
Jancy Slugger, Metabo, BDS, Unibor, Nitto, Champion. Solid machines at $425 to $849 in the sample, with a longer parts path. A BDS MABasic 200 at $750 or a Metabo MAG32 at $849 is fair money for the iron; the question is who services the coil.
Approach carefully. No-name imports below $300. Every VEVOR machine in the listings read here was priced under $300, and none survived the floor. Thinner castings, a smaller magnet face, no parts path.
Inspection Checklist
Work through these in order, with the seller’s permission.
Magnet face and holding force
The face should be flat, bare metal, free of rust pitting, gouges, and spatter. Flatness is what keeps holding force on the plate, and a face belt sanded to look clean is often no longer flat. Energize on clean 1 inch plate: it should clamp hard and resist a firm pull.
Read the numbers correctly. Dead lift is a straight pull off the plate. Drill point breakaway is the tipping load at the cutter, the one that decides whether the machine stays put when a cutter grabs. Hougen publishes both at two thicknesses: 1,750 and 995 lb on 1 inch plate, 1,310 and 710 lb on 3/8 inch. Fein publishes one holding force, 2,023 lb, and Evolution’s spec sheet, as recorded on the new-machine page, quotes a single 2,860 lb adhesion figure. One number cannot be compared with a pair, because it does not say whether it was measured as lift or breakaway, or on what plate.
The arbor and the cutter
Weldon 3/4 inch is the default. Hougen’s 12,000-series cutters are 3/4 inch shank, and Fein lists a 3/4 inch straight shank holder. Six-piece sets ran $62.99 to $65.99 on eBay on 3 November 2026.
Morse Taper appears on heavier and older machines, and on the Fein KBM 50 QX listing read here, which describes a 3MT spindle. It commits the buyer to MT tooling or an adapter that adds stack-up.
Quick-change trades rigidity for speed. The used risk is a missing collar or arbor.
Cutter capacity is a system limit. The HMD904 is rated to 1-1/2 inch, the Fein JHM and Milwaukee 4272-21 to 1-5/8 inch. A 3/4 inch arbor will accept a 2 inch cutter that the motor cannot drive and the magnet cannot hold.
Slide, gibs, and spindle
Lock the slide and try to rock the motor housing. Movement is a worn gib or a scored dovetail. Indicate the arbor bore or a test pin while turning the spindle by hand: a bent spindle shows as runout and a hole that walks. Fein publishes a 2-9/16 inch stroke but a 2 inch cutter depth, so the stroke is not the depth of cut.
Coolant and swarf
An annular cutter cuts a ring and leaves a slug. Milwaukee warns not to remove the cutter until the slug is out, because it can eject unexpectedly. Hougen’s coolant bottle is a model option, so the base HMD904 has none.
Overhead work changes the question. Milwaukee warns against cutting fluid in any overhead position that lets fluid enter the motor or switch enclosure. A purpose-built mag drill has a coolant path the operator can control in that position. A drill press with a magnet bolted on has a quill, a chuck, and no gib adjustment.
Safety strap and lift detector
A magnetic drill releases under load: paint or scale under the magnet, chips on the face, plate thinner than the rating, nonmagnetic stainless, a power interruption, or a cutter grabbing past the breakaway rating. Milwaukee’s manual puts the rule plainly: “Always use safety chain. Mounting can release.”
Check the strap and bracket first. The bracket is often the only part left, so look for cut webbing and missing hardware. Then test the lift detector where fitted: with the magnet engaged and the motor running clear, lift one edge of the base and confirm the motor stops. Hougen lists that system on the HMD904.
What the machine arrives without
- Cutters. Hougen includes the 12,000-series kit only in the Fabricator’s Kit models.
- Pilot pins. They come with cutters and go missing first.
- Coolant bottle. A model option, not standard.
- Safety strap or chain. Listed as included new, so it goes missing used.
What to Pay
These are asking prices from the eBay search opened 3 November 2026, filtered to used with a $300 floor. They are not sold prices, and freight is not in them.
| Asking band | Machines seen in the sample |
|---|---|
| $300 to $449 | Champion MiniBrute AC35 $314.99, Hougen HMD904 $399, Champion RB30 $425, Fein JHM USA 101 $449 |
| $450 to $649 | Hougen HMD115 $500, Hougen HMD130 $500, Fein Short Slugger $550, Hougen HMD904 $579.99, Milwaukee 4201 $599, Jancy JM2000 $599.99 |
| $650 to $999 | BDS MABasic 200 $750, Fein KBM 50 QX $800, Metabo MAG32 $849, Unibor E50FR-1 $899.99 |
| $1,000 to $1,400 | Metabo cordless $1,000, Milwaukee 4272-21 $1,100, Milwaukee M18 2788-20 $1,149.99 to $1,299.99 |
At $300 the sample held 21 machines at $300 to $449, 36 at $450 to $649, 55 at $650 to $999, and 64 above $1,000. The middle of the market is where the choice is.
A $399 HMD904 with no cutters, no bottle, and no strap needs $63 to $90 of cutters plus a strap. Against $1,107 to $1,230 new with a warranty, used is still ahead, but not by the sticker margin.
Accessories to Budget
| Item | Why it is on the list | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| 3/4 inch Weldon annular cutter set, six piece | The machine arrives without cutters | $62.99 to $65.99 observed new |
| Single cutters in the sizes actually drilled | Sets rarely match the work | $31.99 to $48.99 observed new |
| Pilot pins | Lost with the cutters they came with | Confirm at checkout |
| Coolant bottle and cutting fluid | A model option on the Hougen line | Confirm at checkout |
| Safety strap or chain | The bracket is usually there, the strap is not | Confirm at checkout |
| 1/2 inch chuck and adapter | Holes below the 7/16 inch cutter minimum | Confirm at checkout |
Cutter prices come from a new-condition eBay search opened 3 November 2026. A Hougen Fabricator’s Kit adds the cutter set, a 1/2 inch chuck, and the adapter, worth more than the gap between two similar machines.
Where to Find Inventory

Used machinery dealers. Higher asking prices and sometimes a short warranty, because someone checked the magnet and the spindle. Ask what “reconditioned” includes.
Plant and fabrication-shop auctions. As-is, and often the best source of cutters, because a lot may include the whole tool crib.
Private sale from a retiring shop. Often the complete package: cutters, pilot pins, coolant bottle, and the strap.
Who This Is NOT For
- Buyers who need a warranty and a known voltage. A new EVOMAG42 at $695 or HMD904 at $1,107 is simpler; model specs are on the best magnetic drill press page.
- Anyone drilling aluminum, stainless, or composite. The magnet needs ferrous steel.
- Work that needs jig-level hole location. A mag drill locates on a punch mark.
- Routine holes above 1-5/8 inch. The portable class tops out there.
- Overhead work without a strap and a lift detector. The release failure mode is the whole safety case.
FAQ
How is the magnet checked on a used mag drill?
Energize on clean 1 inch plate and try to slide it; a firm pull should not move it. Then check the face for pitting and gouges. Milwaukee’s manual states that paint, rust, scale, and chips all reduce holding power.
What is drill point breakaway, and why does it matter more than dead lift?
Dead lift pulls straight off the plate; breakaway tips the machine over the cutter, which is what releases it mid hole. Hougen rates the HMD904 at 1,750 lb dead lift and 995 lb breakaway on 1 inch plate, 1,310 and 710 lb on 3/8 inch.
Which arbor type should a buyer choose?
Weldon 3/4 inch, because it is the common shank and both Hougen and Fein list it. Morse Taper commits the buyer to MT tooling or an adapter. Quick-change is faster but needs its proprietary collar.
What is usually missing from a used magnetic drill?
Cutters, pilot pins, the coolant bottle, and the safety strap. Hougen includes the cutter kit only in the Fabricator’s Kit models and lists the bottle as an option.
